Toddler still not talking much at 18 months
Lucas says maybe 5 words clearly. He babbles a lot and understands everything we say, follows directions, points at things... but the actual words aren't coming. Pediatrician says to wait until 2 for evaluation. Anyone else's late talker turn out fine?
The signs you describe (understanding language, following directions, pointing, babbling) are all positive indicators! Receptive language developing before expressive language is normal. At 18 months, the typical range is 5-20 words, so Lucas is on the lower end but within range. Many 'late talkers' have a language explosion between 18-24 months. Things that help: narrate your day, read books together, pause and wait for responses, don't anticipate all needs (let him try to communicate). If you want peace of mind before age 2, you can request an early intervention evaluation - they're free in most states and there's no downside to checking. Many kids do catch up on their own!
